13 Ways You Could Be Harming Your Cat Without Realizing

1. Neglecting the Litter Box

Cats are very clean creatures, and neglecting to clean the litter box can be harmful to your cat's health as well as your own. Your cat may even refuse to use the litter box altogether if it is too dirty. The litter box should be cleaned at least once a day if you have one cat, and more frequently if you have multiple cats.

2. Not Cleaning Their Food and Water Dishes

You must clean and wash your cat's food and water dishes daily. Leaving food or water unchanged for more than one day gives bacteria a chance to grow, especially if you're using wet food. This can directly harm your cat's health. Your cat's dishes should be taken care of the same way you take care of your own dishes.

3. Not Using the Right Dishes

It is best to choose dishes made of stainless steel and avoid materials such as plastic and ceramic. These materials get scratched over time, and bacteria accumulate inside these scratches, making them difficult to clean. Stainless steel, on the other hand, does not develop such scratches and is easier to clean. Also, avoid deep dishes as they can cause discomfort and stress to your cat's whiskers, which are highly sensitive. Opt for wide, shallow dishes instead.

4. Punishing Your Cat

If your cat does something you don't like, never think of punishing or shouting at them. They will see it as an attempt to hurt them, which will break the bond of trust between you. Instead, try searching online for specific reasons why your cat might be acting out and how to address it properly. There are many tips that can help you change the bad behavior without damaging your relationship.

5. Waking Them Up

Cats sleep between 12 and 18 hours every day. They love sleeping and will never be happy if they are disturbed during their rest. Avoid making loud noises while your cat is sleeping, and definitely don't wake them up.

6. Ignoring Them When They Ask for Attention

Despite spending a lot of time alone, cats sometimes need to spend time with you to get the affection and security you provide. If your cat tries to get your attention by rubbing against you, sitting next to you, or getting near your hand, never ignore them. Doing so can make them feel sad, lonely, and possibly even depressed if ignored consistently.

7. Loud Noises

Cats are afraid of loud and unexpected noises, such as vacuum cleaners, hairdryers, loud TV, or music. They are also startled by loud human voices, thunder, slamming doors, and other sudden sounds. Try your best to avoid exposing your cat to these noises, and never shout at them.

8. Strong Smells

Cats have a sense of smell that is 14 times stronger than humans. They are often annoyed by strong smells we use around the house, such as cleaners or air fresheners. Products like perfume, creams, or shampoos can also bother them. Avoid hugging your cat immediately after using these products, as it could make them associate you with undesirable smells.

9. Grabbing Their Tail or Rubbing Their Tummy

Most cats don't like having their bellies touched because the belly area is one of the weakest parts of a cat's body. If you've owned the cat since it was a kitten and have handled it with care, it might allow you to touch its belly, but it's generally best to avoid doing so if your cat shows discomfort. Similarly, gripping the tail is not welcome and may provoke an unexpected reaction. Avoid any actions that make your cat uncomfortable to be their source of safety and comfort.

10. Aggressive Petting

When playing with your cat, avoid petting it forcefully or quickly as this can scare the cat and make it want to escape. Also, don’t hug your cat too tightly, as this will make it feel trapped. Always be gentle when petting or playing with your cat.

11. Not Respecting Your Cat's Privacy

Cats are independent creatures and prefer to spend quiet time alone. Make sure your cat has a quiet place to retreat, such as a designated room or a corner with a small house and some toys. This place should be away from noise sources, such as TVs and living rooms, and should be warm. Most importantly, respect the times when your cat wants to be alone and avoid disturbing them.

12. Giving Them Milk

Contrary to what cartoons suggest, milk is not good for cats. Adult cats have difficulty digesting the lactose found in milk, which can cause digestive problems and discomfort. Although cats may drink milk without hesitation, it is ultimately more harmful than beneficial.

13. Dressing Them Up in Clothes

Cats get annoyed by anything on their body that they can't remove. Clothes restrict their freedom of movement and make them feel uncomfortable. Avoid dressing your cat in clothes, as it will likely cause them stress and discomfort.
